AP Research or AP Seminar: which should you take, and in what order

In short

AP Seminar is 45% a two-hour written exam and 55% coursework in teams and individually. AP Research has no exam at all: 75% is a 4,000–5,000 word academic paper and 25% a 15–20 minute presentation with an oral defence. If you perform under timed conditions, Seminar suits you. If you work best over months, Research does.

These two are usually discussed as a pair because the College Board designed them as one, but they test genuinely different abilities. The assessment structure tells you which suits you.

Those figures come from the College Board's own AP Seminar and AP Research assessment pages.

AP Seminar in detail

Three components, and nearly half of it is a single sitting.

Team Project and Presentation — 20%. Teams of three to five. You write an individual research report of 1,200 words, scored by the College Board, and your team delivers an 8–10 minute multimedia presentation and defence, scored by your teacher.

Individual Research-Based Essay and Presentation — 35%. A 2,000-word individual written argument scored by the College Board, a 6–8 minute presentation scored by your teacher, and an oral defence with two teacher questions.

End-of-Course Exam — 45%. Two hours, fully digital in the Bluebook app. Three short-answer questions on a single source, and one essay question based on four sources. Scored by College Board-trained readers.

The team component is the thing students most often overlook when choosing. A fifth of your grade depends on three to five other people showing up, and if you have strong feelings about group work, that matters.

AP Research in detail

Two components, no exam, and one very long piece of writing.

The academic paper — 75%. "The academic paper should be 4,000–5,000 words long." That is three-quarters of your score resting on one document produced over most of a school year.

Presentation and oral defence — 25%. Fifteen to twenty minutes, then three to four questions from a panel of trained evaluators and your AP Research teacher.

No written exam. The College Board states plainly: "There is no end-of-course written exam for AP Research."

That last point reshapes the whole year. There is no date in May on which you can recover a weak performance, and equally no date on which a bad morning can cost you. Everything is cumulative.

Which one suits you?

The question is not which is harder. It is which failure mode you are more vulnerable to.

Take Seminar seriously if you perform under time pressure. Forty-five per cent of your grade is two hours of reading unseen sources and constructing an argument. Students who think fast and write cleanly in exam conditions have a large advantage here that does not transfer to Research at all.

Research suits you if you finish things nobody is chasing you for. Between September and April, nothing external requires a draft. The students who struggle are not the weaker writers — they are the ones who have never completed a long project without an imposed deadline. If every substantial thing you have finished had someone else's due date on it, know that about yourself going in.

Take both if you want the Diploma. Scores of 3 or higher in both, plus four additional AP Exams of your choosing, earns the AP Capstone Diploma. The two Capstone courses alone earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

Most schools run them in sequence, Seminar first. The AP Research assessment page does not itself state a prerequisite, so ask your coordinator rather than assuming — the answer is set locally.

How AP Research compares to the EPQ and the Extended Essay

It sits between them, and it is the closest of the three to a real paper.

The assessed oral defence is the distinctive feature. Neither the EPQ nor the Extended Essay makes you answer a panel's questions about your method for marks, and that is exactly what a university interview does. If you are applying to a UK university or anywhere with interviews, AP Research is unusually good preparation.

Our comparison of the EPQ and the Extended Essay covers the other two in detail.

Choosing a question that works

Same test as any research project: can you say in one sentence what evidence would change your answer?

With 4,000 to 5,000 words you have room for a real methods section, which means you should pick a question with data behind it rather than a purely argumentative one. "To what extent is social media harmful" will produce a summary of other people's arguments. "Does reported screen time predict reported sleep duration in the 2023 Monitoring the Future sample, controlling for grade and sex" will produce a finding.

Where to find a free dataset lists twenty-two sources, and how to build a question worth publishing is the method.

One constraint to plan around early: if your question needs a laboratory, most universities bar under-eighteens from BSL-2, radioactive and animal work. Work in the computational corner of your field instead of waiting for a reply that is unlikely to come.

Can the paper be published?

More realistically than the EPQ or the EE, because it is already shaped like a paper.

The conversion work is smaller: you already have a research question, a method and a discussion. What a journal will want is a tighter methods section and the removal of anything written for the rubric rather than for a reader.

If publication is a goal, choose a question with original data at the outset. Then read the venue's rules before you write — our complete guide to publishing sets out what each journal takes and what each costs.

Where we fit

The Oxford Centre for Advanced Research pairs students with PhD candidates and early-career researchers at Oxford, Cambridge, other leading UK universities and Ivy League institutions. The Oxford Scholar Programme is £2,000 — about $2,600 — for ten contact hours over ten to fourteen weeks; the Oxford Publication Fellowship is £3,400, roughly $4,400.

AP Research already gives you a supervising teacher, a structure and a deadline, which is most of what a paid mentorship supplies. If your AP Research teacher is engaged, you do not need us. Where students come to us is when they want to take the paper further than the rubric requires — usually toward submission.

The honest question before you choose

Have you ever finished something substantial that nobody was chasing you for?

If yes, AP Research will suit you and the paper will be better than anything a timed exam could show. If no, AP Seminar's exam is a safety net worth having, and taking Seminar first is the sequence for a reason.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AP Seminar and AP Research?

Assessment shape, mostly. AP Seminar is 45% an end-of-course exam plus team and individual coursework. AP Research has no written exam at all — 75% of the score is a 4,000 to 5,000 word academic paper and 25% is a presentation with an oral defence. Seminar tests argument under time pressure; Research tests sustained independent work.

Do you have to take AP Seminar before AP Research?

The two are designed as a sequence within AP Capstone and most schools run them that way, Seminar first. The College Board's AP Research assessment page does not itself state a prerequisite, so the answer in practice is set by your school. Ask your coordinator rather than assuming.

What is the AP Capstone Diploma?

You earn it with scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research plus four additional AP Exams of your choosing. Scores of 3 or higher in the two Capstone courses alone, without the four extra exams, earns the AP Seminar and Research Certificate instead.

How long is the AP Research paper?

4,000 to 5,000 words, and it carries 75% of your score. The remaining 25% is a 15 to 20 minute presentation and oral defence, answering three to four questions from a panel of trained evaluators and your teacher. There is no end-of-course written exam.

Which is harder?

Different hard. Seminar's exam is two hours of reading unseen sources and building an argument under time pressure. Research has no time pressure and no safety net — nothing external forces progress between September and April, which is where most students struggle.

Can the AP Research paper be published?

Sometimes, with work. It is already close to a paper in shape, which puts it ahead of the EPQ or Extended Essay. If you choose a question with original data behind it rather than a purely argumentative one, converting it for a student journal is realistic rather than a rewrite.
