TL;DR
Imperial is ranked joint 2nd in the world by QS for 2026, which makes it the highest-placed UK university on that table. It organises itself into just four faculties, and none of them is arts or humanities. For 2027 entry it is offering at least 300 Imperial Inspires scholarships worth £15,000 a year to international students.
If you search “What is Imperial College London known for?” or “Is Imperial better than Oxford?”, you will find something interesting: the answer depends almost entirely on what you want to study. Imperial is not a smaller version of Oxford or Cambridge. It is a different kind of institution altogether, and once you understand how it is built, its rankings and its reputation start to make a lot more sense.
Essentially, Imperial does four things and does not attempt the rest. That focus is the single most important fact about the place, and it explains why it sits joint 2nd in the world on one table and 5th in the UK on another. This guide walks through what Imperial actually teaches, how it ranks, which subjects it leads in, how the application works, and what it costs an international student.
What is Imperial College London actually known for?
Imperial is known for being narrow and very good at what it does. It organises itself into four faculties, and that list tells you nearly everything:
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Natural Sciences
- Faculty of Medicine
- Imperial Business School
What you’ll notice is what is missing. There is no faculty of arts, no faculty of humanities, no law school. Imperial describes its own mission as inspiring the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, medicine and business, and that is a genuinely complete description rather than marketing language.
The campus is in South Kensington in central London. QS notes that Imperial’s neighbours there include the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Albert Hall. On the contrary to Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial has no college system, so your department rather than a college is where you belong.
How highly is Imperial ranked?
This is where things get interesting, because the three main tables disagree quite a lot about Imperial.
| Ranking | UK position | World position |
|---|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings 2026 | 1st | joint 2nd |
| Times Higher Education 2026 | 3rd | 8th |
| Complete University Guide 2027 | 5th | not applicable |
QS ranks Imperial 1st in the UK and joint 2nd in the world, ahead of both Oxford and Cambridge. Times Higher Education puts it 3rd in the UK and 8th globally. The Complete University Guide has it 5th in the UK with a score of 905.
Here’s the good news, though: underneath those different headline positions, two of Imperial’s individual scores are the strongest in the country. On the Complete University Guide’s own measures, Imperial ranks 1st in the UK for research quality with a score of 3.63, and 1st in the UK for graduate outcomes at 92.4. Its entry standards score of 205 is 3rd, behind only Cambridge and St Andrews.
So the gap between the tables is not really a disagreement about quality. Global rankings reward research scale and international reach, which suits Imperial perfectly. The domestic table also weighs things like student satisfaction and spending on facilities, where Imperial does less well, and that is what pulls it to 5th.
Which subjects is Imperial strongest in?
Imperial places 14 subjects in the UK top ten on the Complete University Guide 2027, which is a lot for an institution that only teaches in four faculties.
The standout is Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, where Imperial ranks 1st out of 33 universities with a perfect overall score of 100.0, the highest entry standards in the country for that subject at 212, and the top research quality score at 3.74.
| Subject | Position |
|---|---|
| Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering | 1st out of 33, perfect score of 100.0 |
| Mechanical Engineering | Top ten |
| Civil Engineering | Top ten |
| Chemical Engineering | Top ten |
| Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Top ten |
| Materials Technology | Top ten |
| Medical Technology and Bioengineering | Top ten |
| Computer Science | Top ten |
| Mathematics | Top ten |
| Medicine | Top ten |
| Biological Sciences | Top ten |
| Chemistry | Top ten |
| Physics and Astronomy | Top ten |
| Geology | Top ten |
These things are important to also consider if you are weighing Imperial against a broader university. If your subject is on that list, you are looking at one of the strongest departments in the country for it. If your subject is not on it, check the four faculties before you go any further. Our guide to the top 10 UK universities for international students sets Imperial against the nine others.
How does applying to Imperial work?
The process works differently from Oxbridge in ways a lot of applicants do not realise.
The basics first:
- You apply through UCAS like any other university, and Imperial does not consider direct applications
- Imperial has no university-wide admissions test. Some departments use one and some do not, and the course page tells you which
- The tests that are used across various courses are the ESAT, TMUA, UCAT and GAMSAT
- Some courses interview and some do not, again depending on the department
- Only one academic reference is required
- Imperial runs contextual admissions schemes for applicants from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds
There is one detail on the UCAS form worth knowing. You get five course choices in total, and each Imperial course you apply to counts as a separate one of those five. If you are applying for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or veterinary science, you can only use four of those five choices for that subject, and the fifth has to be something different.
What does Imperial cost an international student?
Home students pay the government-capped fee. Imperial confirms that this is £9,790 for 2026/27 and £10,050 for 2027/28, and that the tuition fee loan covers it in full.
For international students, Imperial does something slightly unhelpful. It does not publish a single Overseas range on its tuition fees page. The Overseas fee is set by Imperial and published on each individual course page instead, so the suggestion is to look up your specific course rather than budgeting from a headline number.
Now, here is the part that genuinely matters if you are applying from abroad. Imperial has a new scholarship programme called Imperial Inspires, and these are the published terms:
- For 2027 entry, Imperial is offering at least 300 scholarships
- Each one is worth £15,000 per year, for every year of your course
- They are for international students paying the Overseas rate
- They run across all four faculties
To be considered you submit your normal UCAS application, and if a scholarship is available for your course and you meet the entry requirements, you are invited to complete an additional essay question from September 2026 onwards. Imperial says it will publish more detail on participating departments closer to the time.
How international is Imperial?
Rank and international mix are separate things, and Imperial scores high on both.
The Complete University Guide records Imperial at 44% international students with a further 8% from the EU, which leaves 48% from the UK. QS puts the international figure slightly higher at 53%. Either way, roughly half the people you study alongside will have come from somewhere else, which is a very different environment from Cambridge at 25% international.
How to build an application Imperial takes seriously
Check whether your course needs a test
Imperial has no university-wide test, so the answer sits on the course page and nowhere else. Find it before you plan your autumn, because ESAT and TMUA registration closes in September.
Read the course page, not the university page
Because departments run their own admissions, the course page is the authoritative source on tests, interviews and the Overseas fee. The university-level pages will not tell you what your specific department wants.
Do not waste choices
Each Imperial course counts separately against your five UCAS choices. Applying to three Imperial courses leaves you two elsewhere, which is a real risk given how selective it is.
Show the subject, not the ambition
Imperial’s entry standards score of 205 is third in the country, behind only Cambridge and St Andrews. When the entry bar sits that high, what you have actually done in the subject is what you have left to show.
Look at Imperial Inspires early
If you are an international applicant, at least 300 scholarships of £15,000 a year is worth planning around. The essay stage opens from September 2026, so know it is coming.
Compare it properly against your alternatives
Imperial against Oxford or Cambridge is a genuine choice, and it goes differently depending on your subject. Our comparison of LSE, Oxford and Cambridge covers how the application processes differ.
How OCAR fits in
Imperial holds the top research quality score in the UK at 3.63, and it runs both an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme and an International Research Opportunities Programme for its own students.
That is worth noticing if you are applying. With entry standards at 205, third in the country, grades are what gets you considered rather than what sets you apart. A student who has run a real project, written it up properly, and can explain what went wrong has something concrete to talk about.
The Oxford Publication Fellowship matches students one to one with an Oxbridge, top UK university, or Ivy League PhD researcher to produce an original research paper, with support to prepare it for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. It will not change your grades, and no programme should promise a publication decision, because that rests with each journal’s own editors.
Frequently asked questions
Is Imperial better than Oxford and Cambridge?
It depends on the table and the subject. QS ranks Imperial 1st in the UK and joint 2nd in the world for 2026, ahead of both. Times Higher Education puts it 3rd in the UK, and the Complete University Guide 5th. Imperial places 14 subjects in the UK top ten, including Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering at 1st. Its four faculties cover science, engineering, medicine and business, so the comparison only applies within those areas.
What subjects does Imperial not teach?
Imperial has four faculties: Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine and the Business School. There is no arts faculty, no humanities faculty and no law school in that list. If you are set on a subject like History, English, Law or Modern Languages, check Imperial’s course search before you count on it, because the faculty structure suggests you will need to look elsewhere.
Does Imperial interview applicants?
Some courses do and some do not. Unlike Oxford and Cambridge, where interviews are standard for shortlisted candidates, Imperial leaves it to individual departments. The same applies to admissions tests: Imperial has no university-wide test, and your course page will tell you whether the ESAT, TMUA, UCAT or GAMSAT applies to you.
How much does Imperial cost for international students?
Imperial does not publish a single Overseas fee range. The fee is set per course and published on each course page, so check yours directly. Home students pay £9,790 in 2026/27 and £10,050 in 2027/28. International applicants should also look at Imperial Inspires, which offers at least 300 scholarships of £15,000 a year for 2027 entry.
What is Imperial’s best subject?
On the Complete University Guide 2027, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering. Imperial ranks 1st out of 33 universities with a perfect score of 100.0, the country’s highest entry standards for that subject at 212, and the top research quality score at 3.74. Imperial places 14 subjects in total in the UK top ten.
Final thoughts
The honest answer to what Imperial is known for is that it is known for doing four things extremely well and refusing to do anything else.
That focus is the whole story. It is why QS puts Imperial above Oxford and Cambridge, why it holds the best graduate outcomes score in the country, and why it will be completely wrong for you if your subject is not one of the ones it teaches. Check the four faculties first. If your subject is in there, then look seriously at the rankings, the course page and the scholarship.
The last thing I’d say is that Imperial Inspires is new. At least 300 awards of £15,000 a year, for every year of the course, is a lot of money on the table, and if you are applying internationally for 2027 it should be part of your planning rather than an afterthought.
